IN THE CARE OF
Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service
Maphis Nelson Cook, 79, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2021.
Maphis was born in Warrenton, Virginia to Harry Cook and Beulah Lomax. After his mother passed at the tender age of 43, young Maphis went to live with his beloved grandmother Dorthea Lomax.
Maphis worked his way of the ranks of Federal service. After 33 years, he retired as a senior Procurement Specialist for the U.S. Army Belvior Research and Development Center in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. It was during his tenure there he met Mary Ann Lee, his partner for the next 40 years. Shortly after retirement, they moved from Hartwood, Virginia to the constant sun and warmth of Palm Bay, Florida.
In life, Maphis enjoyed an array of hobbies like watching NASCAR, tapping his foot while singing along to lively Bluegrass music; and in the best of times, he loved the beach. Maphis took great pride in maintaining his home. Always, he enjoyed quietly reading, solving crossword and suduko puzzles, or putting together a complicated jigsaw puzzle.
Maphis is survived by his long-time partner Mary Ann and her daughters, his “children of the heart”, Mary Jo, Cheryl, Wanda, Edie and Lisa.
A memorial service to be held on Sunday, February 28th at 12:00 will be followed by a short graveside ceremony at 1:00.
