Jeannine was born May 21, 1940 in Washington, DC to Gordon Kunz and Coral Kunz (nee Potter). Death took her mother from her in 1945. Single fatherhood was unusual in those times, so Jeannine came to live with her grandmother in Georgetown. Eventually, Jeannine attended “Villa Maria” a Catholic boarding school in Lynchburg, VA starting in the 3rd grade through high school. Jeannine converted to Catholicism at the age of 15 to her father’s utter dismay. However, she drew enormous strength from her faith which helped her through many difficulties.
Upon her high school graduation, Jeannine set her sights on becoming a nurse and enrolled at the Washington Hospital Center’s nursing program. Yet, fate intervened (sort of) when she met her future husband, Robert. Robert’s sister went to the same Catholic school as Jeannine and his mother schemed with her grandmother and set them up on a date. When he stood her up for a later date because he was studying for his college degree, he was astounded she was so upset and crying. So, he decided to marry her and marry her he did on Aug 21, 1959. Because married women could not attend nursing school, she traded that dream for another – motherhood. Jeannine had three children, three separate pregnancies, in twenty-five months. She wanted more, but her accountant husband said “no.” However, she got her wish 13 years later when she was blessed with a 4th child. We older kids joked he was an “oops” baby, but my father shared that she had every intention of having another child and she did. In the 1970’s, Jeannine went to work for AT&T until she retired as an ever-faithful employee in the mid-1990’s. During this time, she raised her sometimes bratty children, cleaned the house, cooked, and went to college at night. She maintained a strong faith and was active in the church teaching catechism and singing in the choir every week, she had a beautiful alto. Those closest to her took all of this for granted and only in time did they realize how remarkable she was. Family, a baby, work, church, and school.
Throughout her life, Jeannine maintained a wicked sense of humor – which not everyone appreciated – but those who knew and loved her certainly enjoyed it along with some colorful language that she threw in here and there. Who knew those words could come out of the mouth of a devote Catholic. She was an intrepid traveler, exploring Alaska, Israel, Jordan, Rome where she had a papal visit with Pope John Paul at the Vatican, she cruised across the Atlantic Ocean from the US to the Netherlands, attended the Phantom of the Opera in London and floated down the canals in Brugge, Belgium.
Jeannine was a terrific mother who unconditionally loved her children even when bratty and during the trials and tribulations of the teenage and young adult years. No matter how many mistakes we made she never said: “I told you so.” Instead, she said “I love you.”
Jeannine’s love of her husband was unconditional as well. He was at times a difficult person; however, she remained loyal and faithful to the end. As he was to her. They meant the world to each other, and her husband understood how precious she was.
Jeannine’s husband preceded her in death. They had four children – Lisa Woerner (Tom, d’ced) of Sahuarita, AZ; Denise McCosh (Brian) of West Palm Beach, FL; Charles Moss (Robin, d’ced) of Midland, VA; Matthew Moss of Washington, DC. Jeannine had four beloved grandchildren, Shara Brantley, Jennifer Cain, Joshua Moss, and Kevin Moss who blessed her with 11 great-grandchildren. Jeannine passed away peacefully, surrounded by family sending her love.
