ST. MARTINVILLE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Rita Comeaux Bernis, age 83, at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church. Msgr. Douglas Courville will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Michaels Cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home of St. Martinville on Monday from 2:00 pm until 10:00 pm, with the rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen on Tuesday from 8:00 am until services.
Rita Comeaux Bernis was born to Semar and Elia Gary Comeaux on January 26, 1927. She was the best mother, wife, friend, and sister to everyone. Her kitchen was open to anyone. She always cooked big meals and fed anyone that would show up. She will dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her 4 daughters, Wanda Sullivan and husband B.K. of St. Martinville, Jackie Fromen and companion Mike Servino of Pem Brooke Pines, FL, Rachel Guidry and husband Rene of St. Martinville, and Tammy Bernis and companion Cindy of St. Martinville; four sons, Cecil Bernis of Louisville, KY, Kenward Bernis of St. Martinville, Glynn “TeeRed” Bernis and wife Barbie of Crescent, OK, and Timothy Bernis of Houston, TX; 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and her sister and brothers, Norma Louviere, Ceasar Comeaux and Jimmy Comeaux.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Son” Bernis; parents, Semar and Elia Gary Comeaux; a grandchild, Rivers “Pas” Bernis; sisters, Mildred Norris, Gussie Fremin, and Verna Mae Boudreaux; and brothers, Preston, Homer, Carrol “Magoo” and Robert Comeaux.
Pallbearers will be Kenward, Cecil, “TeeRed” and Timothy Bernis, Keith Latiolais and Kevin Picard, II. Honorary pallbearers will be B.K. Sullivan, Rene Guidry, Mike Servino and Kenward “Boo” Bernis, Jr.
