Funeral services will be conducted for Tookie at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Coteau Holmes Full Gospel Church. Brother Lanny Hayes will officiate. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends at Evangeline Funeral Home in St. Martinville will begin on Wednesday at 4:00 pm and stay open until the funeral time on Thursday.
John, better known as “Tookie” by family and friends, was a kindhearted and fun loving man who enjoyed the simple things in life. Tookie loved to laugh and sing. He would often try and coax people into singing songs with him. He also enjoyed various kinds of art and did a lot of drawings. He was also perhaps the biggest New Orleans Saints fan in all of Acadiana! Tookie never knew a stranger. He treated everyone he met like they were family. Tookie was many things, but he was first and foremost a family man and loved being around his daughter, siblings, and granddaughter, Wiette, who was the light of his life. Family was so important to him. A loving father, grandfather, brother, step-brother, uncle, and friend to all, Tookie will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Tookie is survived by his daughter, Dalila Patin (Austin); ; granddaughter, Wiette Buratt; siblings, Patrick Smith, Jason Patin (Moriah), David Patin (Renee), Dalila Johnson (Chad), Celina Smith (Mitchell), and Esther Horton (Kevin); step-siblings, Wiley Hayes, Jr. (Kristie), Wesley Hayes, Jessie Hayes, Deena Melancon (Leland), Della Hayes, and Sally Hayes (Pat); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Patin, Sr. and Linda Boutte Patin; and niece, Ella Horton.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Smith, Sr., Jason Patin, David Patin, Kevin Horton, Mitchell Smith, Sr., Devyn Johnson, and Joseph Richard.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Snelling, Chad Johnson, Mitchell Smith, Jr., Timmy Walker, Christian Johnson, Jordan Smith, Jace Patin, Cody Smith, Patrick Smith, Jr., Jaydan Smith, and Koa Horton.
