Jerome (Jerry) Conrad Huelsman, a distinguished WWII veteran, passed away at the remarkable age of 102. He will be remembered not only for his service to his country but also for his unwavering love and devotion to his family.
Jerry was born on November 19, 1920, and he departed from this world on November 2, 2023. He lived almost all of his life in the St. Louis area, and he was a loving and devoted family man. He was married 70 years to his wife, Bernadette (Bunny) Huelsman, with whom he shared countless treasured moments from square dancing to exploring the world. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. When Jerry became a father, his bond with his son, Greg, was evident from the start and continued to strengthen over the years through many memorable moments including an unforgettable trip to Yellowstone in 2016. Their love and support for one another never wavered. In 1977, Jerry gained a daughter-in-law, Sharon, whom he absolutely cherished. He enjoyed all the moments they spent together and whenever they were together laughter followed. Jerry’s legacy lives on through his two grandsons, Gregory and Jacob, his granddaughter-in-law, Kimberly, and his two great-grandchildren, Jameson and Colette. He frequently mentioned how blessed he was to have his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in his life and he has left a lasting impact on their lives. In addition to his immediate family, Jerry is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who admired his wisdom, kindness, and resilience.
A dedicated patriot, Jerome served his country during World War II, where he displayed great courage and sacrifice. He was a three-time recipient of the Bronze Star for valor in a time of combat. After his war time service, he worked for the Department of Defense at McDonnel-Douglas and attended St. Louis University. In 2016, he was recognized for his service when he participated in the St. Louis Honor Flight, a tribute to his bravery and dedication to our nation.
An avid sports enthusiast, Jerome's heart belonged to St. Louis. One of his earliest jobs was working as a ticket-taker at Sportsman’s Park where he would make a nickel a day or a dime if there was a double header. This allowed him to be close to the sport he loved, baseball, and the teams he admired, the Browns and the Cardinals. He remained a full-fledged, red-blooded supporter of the Cardinals for the rest of his life.
Funeral arrangements for Jerry will be held at Kriegshauser Mortuary-West Chapel. Visitation will take place on November 12th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, where friends and family can pay their respects. The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 13th, at 10:00 AM, celebrating the remarkable life of this extraordinary man.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a cause close to Jerome's heart, which can be specified in your own way. This act of kindness will honor his legacy of love, service, and dedication to family and community.
Jerome (Jerry) Conrad Huelsman will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever shine as a beacon of love, strength, and devotion to family, country, and community. His remarkable journey through life serves as an inspiration to all who were fortunate to know him.
