Born in Koenigsberg, East Prussia, Germany. Egon and his family were displaced during World War 2 eventually ending up in West Germany and then immigrating to the United States in 1952. As a U.S. Citizen, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He continued his service to his country after he graduated from the University of Utah by working for the Department of Defense as a Geophysicist in St. Louis, Missouri for his entire career.
Egon dedicated his life to the service of others. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served as a missionary. One mission as a young man and two more later in life together with his wife Alta. He also served as Stake Clerk, Bishop and a worker in the St. Louis Temple. In the Boy Scouts, he put in countless hours supporting the scouts. As a father, he and his wife Alta raised 6 children, with 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. As a neighbor, he was always there to help and at Christmas would have a plate of German baked goods for each of his neighbors and friends.
Egon’s hobbies were also acts of service. He fixed anything and everything. He was an active Ham Radio operator. He worked on his own genealogy and documented his and his family's history. He baked bread and sweets from his childhood.
Egon died in his home on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Isa and Vera and his granddaughter Deirdre. His surviving family include his wife Alta Cox Wetzker, his sister Asta Austin, his children: Alma (Christine), Heidi, Orlin (Missy), Brian (Kim), Benson (Cheryl) and Nora (Maxwell) Drown. His grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Saturday, September 24 from 10-11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4511 Butler Hill Road 63128. A Funeral Service will immediately follow the visitation.
Interment with Full Military Honors will be Monday, September 26 at 12:30pm at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
