Arnold H. Schwab

He was born to Sarah and Leo Schwab in 1914, and was raised in Chicago, moved to St. Louis and enjoyed living in Jupiter, FL in later years. Arnold attended Morgan Park Military Academy where he excelled in academics as well as athletics. His undergraduate degree was earned at the Univ. of Chicago. After completing DePaul Law School, he served in the Army Air Corps for 4 years, including time spent at Officer Candidate School at Harvard University. He loved reminiscing about his time in Corsica, N. Africa, and Italy during WWII. During that time, he was awarded the Bronze Star and 7 battle stars and was a very proud member of the 57th Bomb Wing. He was discharged as a Captain in 1946.

Arnold married Louise Milton of St. Louis, the love of his life, later that year. Arnold and Louise were together for 70 years when she passed in 2016. They moved their young family to St. Louis in 1955 where Arnold worked as Vice President of the Milton Oil Company until 1962, when he founded the A.H.Schwab Co, manufacturing wooden toys under the brand name 4J, a nod to his 4 children: John, Julie, Jan, and Joe. Arnold was a consummate businessman, a respected and highly successful salesman. Only 6 years after opening his business, it was purchased by Beatrice Foods, and he was able to act as General Manager & Consultant until 1973. Then, turning his attention to other interests, he & Louise began to travel the world extensively, allowing him to play some of the world's finest golf courses from Scotland to S. Africa. Arnold's passion for golf began when he was introduced to the sport in Chicago at Ravisloe CC in 1948. He was a natural and continued playing as a member of Westwood CC for 60 years. He also played regularly in Jupiter, FL at Jonathan's Landing Golf Club in later years. He took pride in shooting his age or better over 150 times and played well into his 90s. Very active in the golf community, he sat on the boards of the Western Golf Seniors Assn. and MO State Senior Golf Associations and served as President of the St. Louis Seniors Golf Assn. Arnold won numerous tournaments including the MO and St. Louis Sr. golf tournaments. He also proudly served as Director and Director Emeritus of the Evans Scholars Foundation, a charitable mission of the Western Golf Association, which awards housing and full tuition college scholarships to high achieving caddies with limited means. Though golf was his passion, Arnold had always excelled in sports, from baseball, football and basketball in high school to table tennis, softball and bowling in early adult life. He was an avid fan, as well, and was thrilled to become a partner in the Chicago White Sox franchise in 1982.

Arnold will be missed, but lovingly remembered by his four children, his grandchildren, and especially his 3 great-granddaughters. His generosity to his family as well as to hospitals, schools, religious organizations and other causes, will not be forgotten.
