Joseph Peter Barker Sr., age 86, passed away on September 9, 2022. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 14, 1936 to his late parents Joseph and Rose Barker. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Sheila ("Penny"); loving children: Patrick (Sue) Barker, the late Theresa (William) Tatum, Joseph (Susan) Barker Jr., Katherine (Gregory) Wandzel, Paul Barker; dear grandchildren: Jillian (Clinton), Benjamin, Ashley (Eric), Amanda, Connor, and Joshua; and precious great-grandchildren: Vivian, Emory, and Lennon.
Joseph was born the 11th of 13 children. Following 3 of his brothers, he proudly served his country in 1958-60. Joseph was an Army Sergeant stationed in Korea. He earned rifle Sharpshooter status and carbine weapon Expert ranking. Joseph had a one-of-a-kind personality and sense of humor; and enjoyed respectful debates, dancing, and wagering on football and horse racing. Above all, he was a family man who adored his wife and cherished his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A memorial mass will be held on October 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. (Instate 9:00 a.m.) at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 22412 Overlake St., St. Clair Shores.
