Gertrude Murray, 96, died peacefully in her home in Grosse Pointe Woods on December 2, 2013, surrounded by four generations of loving family. Born in Detroit on August 7, 1917, Gertrude Mabel McCallum was the eldest of John and Mabel McCallum's five children. After living briefly in Homestead, Pennsylvania, the McCallums returned to Michigan and settled in St. Clair Shores.
She married Edward "Fran" Murray in 1938. During their 55 years of marriage, they resided in St. Clair Shores and Grosse Pointe Woods. Together they founded Murray & Associates, a successful public accounting practice. Between 1938 and 2007, she advised thousands of local individuals and businesses. Seventy-five years later, the firm still serves some of its original clients.
Gertrude, Fran and their family spent many days together at their cottage at Old Point Comfort on Higgins Lake, a tradition continued today by their many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her sisters Jeanne Srigley of St. Clair Shores and Frances Brett of Hillsboro, Oregon, daughter Susan (Arthur) Brooks, sons Patrick (Carolyn) Murray and Michael (Catherine) Murray, 21 nieces and nephews, 14 grandchildren , and 29 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fran, her daughter Lynne (Mike) Stockwell, her son Dennis (Julie) Murray, and her brothers John "Bud" (Nadine) McCallum and James (Ardene) McCallum. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Higgins Lake Foundation.
Visitation will take place on Thursday from 5-9 pm and Friday from 2-9 pm at Kaul Funeral Home 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. Scripture service Friday 7:00 pm. In state on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of mass 10:00 am at St. Lucy Catholic Church 23401 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. Burial, Resurrection Cemetery.
