With heavy hearts, we announce the loss of our wonderful friend, family member and mischief maker, Mike. Mike passed away peacefully at home at the age of 70 with his soulmate, Marilyn Atherton (Mel) and his loving fur baby, Finnegan by his side.
Mike was the cherished brother of Joanne Courchesne and close family friend to Jacquie Tollerton. He was father to Patrick and proud Grandpa to Kyle. Mike was adored by his chosen family; Celina, Devon & Chris, Sean (Jenn), Arden, Trevor, Kendra & Jaycob. Predeceased by his parents Pauline and George Courchesne and treasured son-in-law of Ken Kavanagh and the late Doreen Kavanagh. He was a devoted brother-in-law to Ron Kavanagh of whom he took such great care. Mike will be sadly missed on the golf course and bowling lanes by his best friend, Brian Clune. Mike’s circle of friendship and support extended across decades-a testament to his willingness to always lend a hand and to his loyal, loving nature.
Mike will always be remembered for his sense of humour, loyalty and love for those he held dear. We know his memory will carry on with the beautiful things he built and left behind and in the jokes and laughter he brought to us. He loved his adventures trekking across the country but he always returned to his beloved Manitoulin Island with Mel. It was their “happy place”.
Mike and Mel will be forever grateful to their steadfast friends and family and to the incredible and caring Dr. Kim Eric Scher and Mike’s compassionate nursing team, including his favourite “Fish Lady”, Rebecca. You all brought light in dark times.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Hulse and English Funeral Home, 75 Church Street, St. Catharines on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The gathering to celebrate Mike’s life will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment service to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines.
Donations in Mike’s memory to the Humane Society of Greater Niagara or to the Walker Family Cancer Centre would be welcomed. Fond memories and condolences may be shared below.
