Our dear mother, Leah, passed away at the Hamilton General Hospital on Sunday December 8, 2024 at the impressive age of 95. Predeceased by her husband, Frank Rudge, and siblings John, Myrtle, Sybil, Edith, Flora, Bill, Freda, Ross, and Marguerite. Survived by her children, Debbie (Will) Kappel, Paul (Debbie) Rudge, Bill Rudge, Dean (Pam) Rudge and Dr. Sara (Paul) Rudge; grandchildren Laura (Peter), Christopher (Annie), David (Katie), Steven (Britany), Colin, Ian, Zachary, Carter (Kayleigh), Taylor, Maxwell and Abigail; great grandchildren Kevin, Conner and Olivia and beautiful sisters, Mary (Art) Rankie and Rosalie Thomas.
Leah was born on the east coast in the tiny fishing village of Harbour Le Cou (made famous by the song by Great Big Sea) in the house her father built for her large, close, loving family which included 12 children. Although she moved to St. Catharines at the age of 18, The Rock was always home. She had a heart of gold that would make any Newfoundlander proud. Prior to marrying Frank, who she met on a blind date, she worked at the Canada Hair Cloth Company. She later devoted her life to caring for her family. Apart from shopping, cooking and knitting, she loved nothing more than baking for her grandchildren. Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary.
Many thanks to all of mom’s caregivers over the past few years. Special thanks to dear friends Gemma and Hazel, the security guards at the Strata building in Burlington, all of the staff at Amica in Dundas and the Hamilton General Hospital, Dr. Maged Samuel and Dr. Mohammed Azharuddin. Your kindness and professionalism will always be remembered.
Cremation has taken place and was entrusted to Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel. If desired, Memorial Donations in Leah’s name may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. A special celebration of life will be held in the Spring with details to follow. Online condolences may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com.
