Bertha Trussell

With great sadness, the family of Bertha Trussell announces her passing on Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, in her 93rd year. Loving wife to John Trussell for 67 years. Mother to Bob (Kathy), Doug (Cindy), David (Kathy), and Janet Bradley. Grandma to Matthew, Tim, Elizabeth, Michael, Julie, Arthur, Sarah, April, Dan, and Joe. Great Grandma to Sofia, Stephanie, Avery, Anya, Aubree, Maddie, Ellie, Lucas, Will, Andrew, Brigette, Henry, Wesley, Eva, Emma, Emilia, Finn, Peter, Olive, and Poppy.

Bertha was born in Bedfordshire in 1930 to Cyril and Maude Matthews. Bertha had a brother Ken (Olive), who lived in Luton, England, and a sister Doris (Ron), who lives in Peterborough, Ontario. In her youth, Bertha worked at a factory sewing hats for the military, where she became a very skilled seamstress. Bertha loved to dance, and it was fitting that she met her husband-to-be at a local dance social. Bertha and John were married and then moved to Canada in 1953. A year later, they were blessed (surprised!) by the arrival of twins.

Bertha dedicated her life to raising her family. She was always driving to games or practices, cheering on her boys, or making the round trip to the horse barn for her only girl. Being surrounded by family was very important to her, especially once the grandkids came along.

Bertha enjoyed supporting John’s lodge and club activities; the two went to countless dinner dances, parties, and “do’s,” as they called them. After John retired, they traveled and discovered new places together. But at heart, Bertha loved some of the simplest things in life, like singing a song or lullaby, dancing to a waltz, reel, polka, or anything with a good beat, tending to gramma’s garden, or just going for a “good walk.” It was tough to keep up with her. We can all find peace knowing she is singing and dancing in a happier place now!

The family would also like to thank the kind and professional service the staff at Ina Grafton Gage long term care facility provided for our precious mom Bertha for many years.

A funeral service for Bertha will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel, 75 Church Street, St. Catharines, ON L2R3C7.
