Robert Fenton Thornton Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. Thornton Sr. and Gladys Lillian Pumphrey, his niece Ashley Bobovsky, nephew Eric Sachs, and his daughters-in-law Laura Thornton and Brenna Thornton.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Mary Thornton. He leaves behind a loving family, including his children Robert Thornton III (Cindy), Michael Thornton, David Thornton (Katie), Rich Cowan (Reńe), and Michael Cowan (Lori). He was a beloved brother to his sisters Carole Sachs (Bill) and Laurel Perkins, and his cherished grandchildren Emily van Uittenbroek (Torrin), Abigail and Olivia Thornton, Erin Keough, Haley Cross (Joshua), and Eric Cowan (Sydney), along with three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife Marie McCarley.
His extended family includes his niece Lisa Thompson, nephew Derek Bobovsky, and bonus family Eric and Mollie Devenbaugh and their children Landon, Brody, and Kolten. Robert is also remembered fondly by numerous other family members and friends.
A dedicated fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Robert also embraced the Saint Louis Cardinals after relocating to Saint Louis. His love for music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, his passion for model trains, and his joy in planning family vacations and spending time with loved ones defined his life. One of his cherished memories was serving as an engineer for a day at the Saint Louis Zoo. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Robert served his country in the United States Air Force for four years before dedicating 35 years of service to the Social Security Office. He was a man who beautifully blended love and life, creating a united and joyful family.
Robert’s legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to family and friends will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
A visitation for Robert will be held Friday, July 5, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Alexander-White-Mullen Funeral Home, 11101 Saint Charles Rock Road, St. Ann, MO 63074 with a service at 1:00 PM and burial to follow.
