Steven Hendrickson, age 71, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away in his home on August 26, 2022. Steven Hendrickson was born in Decorah, Iowa to Kermit and Nora Hendrickson on April 2, 1951. He went to school in Decorah. He married Virginia Hendrickson on May 26, 1973, in Svea, Minnesota. He graduated from Luther College with a BA in music and philosophy in 1973. Steve fell in love with the trumpet at an early age and went on to become a renowned trumpeter in the trumpet world. He joined the National Symphony Orchestra as assistant principal trumpet in 1982 and became principal trumpet in 1988. He continued to play with the NSO until his retirement in 2021. As principal trumpet Steve made numerous recordings with the NSO. He played as soloist in the Arutunian Concerto, J.S. Bach’s Brandenberg Concerto No. 2, Persichetti’s The Hollow Men, Copland’s Quiet City, and the Haydn Trumpet Concerto. He also made a solo CD on MSR Classics for which he has received rave reviews. Steve taught trumpet for 17 years at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and for 15 years at the University of Maryland. He performed many solo recitals in the area and gave master classes in trumpet at many music schools, including Juilliard and the Manhattan School. Steven received the Carlo A. Sperati Award in recognition of meritorious achievement in the field of music in 1988 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1993 from Luther College. Steve was an avid golfer and member of the National Golf Club. Steve was involved in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where he served as a Stephen Minister. In later years he enjoyed the Men’s Group. Steve is preceded in death by his father, Kermit Hendrickson and his mother, Nora Hendrickson. Steve is survived by his wife Virginia Hendrickson, his children, Angela and Brett Hendrickson, his grandchildren, Christopher, Alexander, and Kyra Langwiser, and his siblings, Kristen, Loren, Neil, and Karl Hendrickson.
