On Monday, April 28, 2014 Richard Ledbetter (age 83) from Denver, Colorado died in his sleep at his residence in Ocean City, MD. He was the dear husband for 47 years of Margot Ledbetter (Marcelin), loving father of Suzanne, Jacqueline, Laura, Caroline and John, grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 2. He is survived by two brothers, Leslie and Martin. His brother, Fred, predeceased him.
Richard went to Clayton School for Boys and Manual Training High School in Denver Colorado. He was an honor roll student, involved in the student council, played football, ran track, and elected Junior Class President and Head Boy at his high school. He continued his education at Dartmouth College, majoring in Botany. In 1953, towards the end of the Korean War, he was drafted into the military and served several years in the Army and Army reserves. Richard then went on to become an engineer with the Department of Transportation.
During his life, Richard traveled to more than 37 different countries, and possibly all the states within the United States. Yemen, Ethiopia, India, Tahiti, Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Hawaii, and Alaska are just some of the places he visited or worked in. It was during his time in Laos that he met his beloved wife, Margot.
All who knew Richard, and especially his loving family, truly enjoyed the time spent with him. He will be remembered as one of the most kind, caring, and well-traveled man who ever lived. He was a wonderful man who was very much loved. Richard will be sorely missed by all who had the fortune of knowing him.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Demaine Funeral Home on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a funeral service on Monday May 5, 2014 at St. Michael Catholic Church at 10:30 am with interment immediately following at Quantico National Cemetery.
The family requests that donations be made in Richard’s name to the American Heart/Stroke Association.
