Obituary of Michael Andrew Boehm

IN THE CARE OF

Demaine Funeral Home

Michael A. Boehm was born May 17, 1966, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Jerome and Eileen Boehm and raised with his brothers, Daniel and David, and his sisters, Theresa and Amy. Mike played varsity football at Bethel Park Senior High School for two years, and was a member of the Major Productions Club. After his graduation from Bethel Park Senior High School in June 1984, Mike enlisted in the United States Army, serving from October 1985 through October 1987, attaining the rank of Specialist (E-4). After being honorably discharged from the Army, Mike pursued his goal of becoming a police officer. He majored in Criminal Justice at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. In his final year of college, Mike interned with the Erie, PA, Police Department. His resolve to be a police officer was cemented. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, Mike eagerly accepted an offer to join the United States Park Police, entering on duty October 6, 1992. Mike graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA and volunteered for assignment in the San Francisco Field Office. He reported to San Francisco in June 1993 and served as a patrol officer. A highlight of his time in San Francisco was his membership and training in the International Police Mountain Bike Training Association (IPMBA). Mike’s passion for police mountain bike training and its benefits as an enforcement tool would be staples of Mike’s patrol tactics throughout his career. Mike transferred to the Washington Metropolitan Area in June 1996, where he was assigned as a patrol officer in the Central District (D-1). In 1998, Mike enhanced his urban patrol expertise while detailed to the 1998 Crime and Violence Task Force, supporting the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. That assignment, patrolling in city neighborhoods that had been identified as high crime areas, gave Mike invaluable experience that would serve him well throughout his career. In May of 2001, Mike, also a Paramedic, was selected as a Paramedic/Rescue Technician in the Aviation Section. He participated in missions including medevacs of critically injured people, protective missions for the President of the United States, transportation of high-risk prisoners, and aerial support of police missions such as searching for fleeing suspects. While in Aviation, Mike was promoted to Sergeant October 6, 2002. In June of 2003, Mike returned to street patrol as a Sergeant in the Rock Creek Station (D-3). He was immediately in his element. From the rigors of aggressive patrol on the 312 beat and in Meridian Hill Park, to Patrolling Georgetown Waterfront Parks and the Capital Crescent Trail on a police mountain bike, Mike had truly found the perfect work area. His last service call was typical of his performance throughout his career, responding, in support of his squad, to render emergency assistance to a citizen. Liked and respected by Academy classmates, peers, and subordinates, Mike had an easy winning smile and a mischievous sense of humor that was well known throughout the Force. Mike’s life was not defined exclusively by friends and experiences on the Park Police. Mike was even more devoted to his family than he was to the job. On July 27, 2002, Mike married Corina Elizabeth Fernandes, and from that day, Mike exuded the love and joy he felt in his marriage. Their happiness was enhanced on June 6, 2007 when Christopher John joined their family. Corina’s mother, Angela Fernandes, with whom Mike enjoyed a wonderful relationship, resides with them. Anyone who came in contact with Mike recognized on sight that his family was Mike’s world. Mike left us too soon, but all who were fortunate enough to have known him will take with them his warmth, his selflessness, his dedication, and his genuineness. The Boehm family and the United States Park Police are diminished by his loss.
