Marilyn passed away on November 26, 2024, peacefully in her home in Springfield, VA. She had just taken her daily walk around the block with her nephew, Andrew, and was blessed to have remained in the home she shared for almost 60 years with her beloved husband, Andy, surrounded by daily family visits, and the photos and memories she held so dear.
Born in Oakland, California in 1929 to Swedish immigrants Axel Gabriel and Hilma Sofia (Anderson) Cederborg, she was always proud of her Swedish heritage including routine visits to Mission Springs Covenant Camp, a place her father helped found in 1926, traditional decorations throughout the house, Smorgasbord at Christmas, and a trip to Sweden late in life. Marilyn attended San Jose State University and graduated from North Park College with a degree in occupational therapy and a Minor in piano (her original Major). She met Lambert ‘Andy’ Anderson at the Oakland (Swedish) Covenant Church, and they married in 1953. Andy’s career in the FBI soon relocated them to Dearborn, Michigan where they started their family with the birth of their first son, Kevin, and their daughter, Kim, and ultimately, in 1961, to Springfield, VA where their third child, Ken, was born.
Arriving in Springfield, Marilyn and Andy quickly joined two things that would become foundations in their lives and that they remain members of still today. First, they joined St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Marilyn’s love of music was lifelong. At North Park, in addition to her piano Minor, she sang in their choir. Upon joining St. Mark’s, she and Andy began singing in the church choir, and later also joined the Northern Virginia Chorale. She sang in one or both of those groups for over 60 years, as well as playing in the St. Mark’s Bell Choir and playing the standup piano at home during holidays right up until this past Christmas.
Sports and healthy living was also important to Marilyn. Because there were no community pools in the neighborhood in 1961, the second thing she and Andy did was to join the Springfield Golf and Country Club. As a member of SGCC she put into practice her considerable skill on the tennis court, the love of which she has passed on to her children and grandchildren. Marilyn was a multi-time Tennis Club Champion, winning singles and doubles championships in the early years. And, she has the distinction of being the oldest club champion at Springfield, having won the Mixed Doubles Championship in 2013 with her son, Ken, at the grand age of 84!
Marilyn was dedicated to raising her family, but also stayed active in a couple of careers. After graduation, she worked as an occupational therapist for two years and continued to do home care visits for kids with cerebral palsy while in Michigan. In Virginia, she transitioned to the tennis industry. Through the late 1970’s and 80’s she was the primary buyer for the Olde Towne Tennis Shop, in Alexandria, VA, worked with Andy running Shirley Racquet Club after that, and went on to be the Director of Flights, Programs and Tournaments at Regency Sport & Health Club for more than 30 years. She was in that role until age 91 when Covid hit and forced her reluctant retirement. In her time at Regency, she routinely filled in and more than held her own across the net from ladies half her age. Between work and tennis, and the blessing of God, Marilyn stayed physically active and mentally sharp right up until her 95th year. She will be greatly missed.
Marilyn is survived by her 3 children and their spouses (Elees, John, and Tiffany) and 8 grandchildren (Erik, Nicole, Katrina, Andrew, Jessica, Krister, Elijah, and Axel) who remember her, first and foremost, as an amazing woman of God who lived out her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in everything she did.
If you are so inclined to give in her name or yours, Marilyn’s favorite charity was the Central Union Mission, a faith-based homeless support facility in DC and VA.
A funeral service for Marilyn will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151 with a reception following funeral services at the church. A graveside service will occur Friday, January 10, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at National Memorial Cemetery At Quantico.
