Obituary of Joseph Francis King

Joseph Francis King, 85, of Annandale, VA passed away on August 8, 2022 at home following a lengthy illness. Joe was born in Concord, NH to Joseph and Irene King on January 15, 1937. He married the former Wilma Acree (Nicki) of Pauls Valley, OK on August 6, 1960, a mere four months after they first met. They were happily married for 62 years. Joe graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1959 and continued his education at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, earning a Master’s Degree in 1969. He served in the Navy for 32 years, including command at sea in USS CLAUDE V RICKETTS (DDG-5) and USS VIRGINIA (CGN-38) Following his retirement from the Navy, he continued his federal service at the Department of Energy. Once fully retired, he volunteered with the local AARP tax office, assisting individuals with preparing their income tax returns. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a lifelong Navy lacrosse fan. Joe is preceded in death by his parents as well as his son, LCDR Joseph Francis King, Jr., USN. Joe is survived by his wife, Nicki, his children Kelly Henry (Michael), Stephen King (Danielle), Elizabeth Tripp (Wayne), Kathryn Billingsley (Matt); Bonnie Morgan, widow of his son, Joe; his grandchildren, Brittany (Chas), Courtney (Jon), Chelsea, Sydney, Mallory, Maggie, Nora, Mitch, Allie, Abbie, Nick, Jake, Megan, and Molly; and his great-granddaughter, Charlie Kaye. He is also survived by his siblings Ann Farrelly (Bob), Janet Smith, Thomas King (Judi), Donna Luti (Bill), and Martha Petersen (Carl) as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM, Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM, Friday, August 19, 2022 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland Way, Annandale, VA. Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Demaine Funeral Home.
