It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Frances Kay Moffett, who left this life on November 3, 2024.
Born on December 18,1944 in Kansas City, Missouri, Frances was born to Edgar E. Smith and Lavinia Smith. Frances became the first in her family to enter college; she pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and continued her education at the University of Maryland where she completed a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
Frances became a professional librarian, first working for the City of the Alexandria system in Alexandria, Virginia as a reference librarian. She later moved to Fairfax County, where she worked in several positions for more than twenty years. She enjoyed being an active member of St. Andrews Church in Burke, Virginia and loved sharing her passion for gardening through her involvement with groups like the Greenbriar Garden Club and the Friends of Greenspring Gardens.
Frances is survived by her brother Charles Smith, her son Matthew Moffett and her grandson Nathaniel Moffett.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, November 23 from 2:00-4:00 at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Virginia, 22151. In lieu of flowers please consider donations in her name to either the Fairfax Library Foundation or the Friends of Greenspring Gardens.
