Frances “Sally” Compton born 9/11/32, died 9/11/17
Frances “Sally” Compton, Springfield, Virginia, passed away at home Sept. 11. The West Virginia native was a former high school educator and coach of girls’ sports teams.
She is survived by daughter Tina Nolen (J.R.), grandson Jared Nolen, and great- grandson Cameron Aspecto-Nolen, all of Springfield, Virginia; siblings Sadie Cox, Elizabeth, West Virginia, and Sam Waggoner, Charleston, West Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Gene O. Compton; grandson Nathan B. Nolen; siblings John Waggoner, Dorothy Cox, Sue Thias and Helen Vincent; and parents, Roy and Laura Waggoner.
She graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1954 from Glenville State College, Glenville, West Virginia. She graduated in 1950 from Wirt County High School in Elizabeth, West Virginia.
Before retiring, she was a teacher at Wirt County High School from 1966-1992, where she taught physical education and English. While there, she started the first girls’ sports teams, coaching basketball, volleyball, softball and track and field. She also supervised the school newspaper and yearbook.
