Florence Whalen Melescue, age 100, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2024. She was born Florence Mary Whalen on December 30, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Matilda Dougherty and John Whalen. She had two brothers, Jack and Harry, and two sisters, Helen and Peggy. She graduated from St. Vincents High School in Philadelphia. After high school, she became a nun with Sisters of St. Francis for seven years, where she taught elementary school. She met her husband John James Melescue through mutual friends Lucille and Willie Hill. They married on February 5, 1955, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. She had daughters Florence Marie and Margaret Mary, and son John (Jim) James, Jr. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, Virginia. She enjoyed reading, road trips, and watching movies on TV. She was a sweet and loving wife and mother, and is survived by her daughter Florence and son Jim, and his wife Suzanne, and their daughters Amber and Jayme.
