David Lawrence Gill

David Lawrence Gill, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away May 7, 2017. David was born February 26, 1943, in Rochester, New York to Lawrence and Norma Gill. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Helen Gill, his son Christopher Gill and his wife Barbara, his daughter Sarah Ehrig and her husband Jim, his grandchildren William Ehrig and Paul Gill, his brother Robert Gill and his wife Phyllis, his sister Suzi Roth and her husband Kenneth, his brother Richard Gill and his wife Winifred, and his brother John Gill.

David attended the University of Missouri on a football scholarship and graduated with a B.A. with Honors in Mathematics. A member of the QEBH Honor Society, and a starting lineman for Mizzou in 1961, 1962 and 1963, he was named a 1963 Scholar Athlete by the National Football Foundation. He played in the East-West Shrine game and the Bluebonnet Bowl, and was selected to the Academic All-Big 8 team in 1963. He went on to earn a masters degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin, taught computer science at the University of Southern Colorado, and worked for many years as a computer scientist at the University of Missouri, BDM, The MITRE Corporation, and Lockheed Martin from which he retired.

David loved singing in his church choirs in Colorado and Washington, DC, and with the Maryland Choral Society, the National Men’s Chorus, and the New Dominion Chorale. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Pueblo, Colorado and a deacon of Western Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, and volunteered many hours with Miriam’s Kitchen and Project Create. He served on the board of the Columbia Montessori School and helped to found the Montessori Middle School, both in Columbia, Missouri. David was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, and especially enjoyed reading, hiking, camping and fishing with his family, and watching his grandsons play lacrosse and baseball.

David’s family and many friends are deeply saddened by the loss of this gentle, kind, intelligent, humorous, and humane man. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on May 21st, 2017, at Western Presbyterian Church, 2401 Virginia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20037.
