Colonel Alan Walter Jones, Jr., 93, known by loved ones as “Bunt,” died on Wednesday, 5 November 2014 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. Colonel Jones, the son of an Army officer, was born at a military hospital in the Philippines and grew up on Army bases around the world. He graduated 1 June 1943 from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Two days later, he married Lillian “Lynn” McGaw in Washington, D.C. Alan served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. He was awarded two Combat Infantry Badges, the Distinguished Service Medal, two Legion of Merits, three Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts. He served as a captain in the 106th Division at the Battle of the Bulge after which he became a prisoner of war for 20 weeks. He served as captain in the 2nd Infantry Division in the Korean War where he was wounded in the battle at Kunu-ri Pass. Alan retired from the U.S. Army in 1973. In 1989, he and Lynn moved to The Fairfax retirement community at Fort Belvoir where they enjoyed the company of many dear friends and classmates. Some of Alan’s favorite pastimes were golfing and travelling. He also enjoyed discussing politics with friends. He was preceded in death by Lynn, his darling wife of 62 years. Survivors include his three children Anna J. Haines of Front Royal, VA; Alan W. Jones, III of El Cerrito, CA; Stephen Jones of Eugene, OR; and two grandchildren. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity in his honor. Alan will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memorial Service will be held at The Fairfax, 9100 Belvoir Woods Parkway, Fort Belvoir, VA, on Friday, 14 November 2014 at 2pm.
