Vernon L. Dunn, 85, of Sweetwater, passed away September 16, 2013 at St. John’s Hospice. Vern was born February 20, 1928 in Yukon, Oklahoma, the son of Floyd and Flora Griffin Dunn. He married Jean Schuyler on August 5, 1947 in Enid, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 nephews, Michael Walker and Randy Dunn, and a niece Sherry Walker.
Vern attended Enid High School and later Phillips University. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Vern was a full time student and worked nights and still found time to help Jean raise their family. After seven years at Phillips University, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science on June 2, 1965.
Vern began working for the Pillsbury Mill at the age of 16. He continued to work for them for 47 years before retiring.
Vern is survived by his wife of 66 years Jean. Also surviving are his sons Terry (wife Beverly) Dunn, and Pat (wife Sandy), daughters Peggy (husband Charlie) Hermann, and Kathy Moushan. Also surviving are brother Edward (wife Lily) Dunn, two sisters Carolyn (husband Jerry) walker and Margaret (husband Wayman) Matlock, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and special family friend Susan Tate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen, Springfield. The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2013, at the funeral home. Rev. Clint Cook will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Springfield, IL. Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Hospice, Springfield, IL.
