He was born on April 13, 1944, the son of William Edwin and Carolyn Brokaw White. He married Patty Lou White on November 27, 1997, in Eureka Springs, AR. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2021.
Steve was very honest, a straight shooter, bullheaded, and a proud Democrat. He attended Media High School and later earned his associate’s degree from Carl Sandburg College. Steve proudly served in the U.S. Army in Wurzburg, Germany. He married Mary Beth Childress in August of 1965 and they divorced in 1992. Steve was an avid golfer in his youth and he enjoyed playing cards, especially poker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Steve is survived by his son, Mac (Jennifer) White; stepson, Phillip (Deborah) Markusson; stepdaughters, Pam Markusson and Mary (Pelich) Kelly; granddaughter, Zoey; step-grandchildren, Amna Al-Zahrani and Sarah Al-Zahrani; Phillip C.J. Markusson and Bradley E. Markusson; and the Pelich kids – Michael, Iggy, Abby Poos, Nina and Gerard; siblings, Carol Magnuson and Russell White; one niece; one nephew; and several cousins. Steve will be dearly missed by many family members and close friends.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2024, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield, with Pastor Chuck Goodman officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors by the Department of Defense and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
