She was born on March 16, 1935, in Yates City, IL, the daughter of Doyle and Freda Chapman Burton. She married Richard Nelson on June 13, 1954, in Galesburg, IL.
Shirley was very caring, loving, and giving who always found the good in every situation. She was a very faithful woman who attended First United Methodist Church in Springfield, and was also involved in the church prayer groups. Shirley volunteered at the gift shop at Memorial Medical Center, and also volunteered in her daughter’s classroom including making tooth fairy pillows for the kids. Additionally, she was a mother advisor for Rainbow Girls and was involved in Eastern Star in Macomb. Shirley loved cross stitching, being a seamstress, baking, bowling, playing the piano and organ, and spending time with her family, as well as traveling with her husband. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1953 and attended Illinois Wesleyan University.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Burton; sister, Carol Watters; grandson, Michael David Kassing; and nephew, Jeff Watters.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Richard Nelson; daughters, Chris (David) Schone, Terri (Bob) Tieche, Brenda (Mike) Ingold, Becky (Doug) Butterfield and Diane (Craig) Farniok; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions in honor of Shirley may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
