He was born in Amboy, IL, the son of Cornelius “C.T.” and Gertrude (Battin) Garland. Bob married Sue Phillips on June 15, 1963, and they lived together happily for 59 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clifford, Joe, Virgil, Dick, and Ray; and five sisters, Delores, Vivian, Midge, Rosamond, and Evelyn.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Garland of Springfield; six children, Kathy (Tom Satre), Lori (Sam Dalton), Sheri (Stephen Gibbons), Robert (Crystal Seavall), Jeff (Kim Surratt), and Tiffany (Jon Sutter); eleven grandchildren, Brendhan, Maisyn, Skylinn, Riley, Maeve, Bobby, Nathan, Marcus, Aiden, Paxton, and Aynslie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob attended Northern Illinois University, where he met Sue and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geology. He also attended University of Illinois, Springfield (Sangamon State University), earning a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity at Northern Illinois University and served as president. Bob was employed by the United Parcel Service and the State of Illinois as an administrator for the Capitol Development Board. He was also a member of Christ the King Parish where he volunteered as lector, Knights of Columbus #364, coach of soccer and baseball teams for 15 years, volunteer for tootsie roll fundraiser, and other events sponsored by Knights of Columbus. Bob was a lifelong Cubs and Bears fan as well as an avid Illini fan. This dedication as a fan extended into every activity his children and grandchildren participated in. Bob was a loving father, husband, and grandfather.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. with Fr. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
