He was born on October 1, 1920 in Springfield, the son of the late James C. and Blanch Rose (Ingram) Reed. He married Dorothy Taylor on Aug. 11, 1940 in Springfield and she preceded him in death in 2001.
Mr. Reed worked as an engineer for Illinois Terminal Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Chatham Lodge 523 AF & AM serving as Master in 1973 and 1982, Springfield Consistory-MSA, Ansar Temple, Ansar Jeepster, Ansar Retirees Club, Ansar Past Master’s Unon, and Capitol City Shrine Club. He was a former member of 5th Presbyterian Church. Later he attended Chatham Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by 3 sons, James (wife Martha) Reed of Nokomis, IL, Raymond (wife Nancy) Reed II of Fairfax, VA, and Robert L. (Beth) Reed of Charleston, SC; 13 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, a sister Bettie Ruth Hulsen of Spaulding, IL and his companion Ruth Ann “Tink” Scothorne.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson James F. Reed II.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., where visitation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 4 to 7 pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 10:30 am at the funeral home, with Rev. Joe Eby officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Springfield.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Transportation Fund.
