Leonard William Smith, 82, of Springfield, passed away on November 11, 2022 at Rochester Estates. He was born on October 2, 1940 in Springfield to Charles Smith and Rose Gillard. Leonard married Sharon Kroenlein on June 2, 1967 and they later divorced.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children: Todd (Dawn) Smith of Auburn, Kristina Smith and Tracy (James) Probst of Springfield, five grandchildren: Josh, AJ, Hannah and Hayden Smith and Makayla Probst, one sister Phyllis Dowllar, one brother Paul Smith Sr. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister Dorothea Davis and one brother Vernon Smith.
Leonard graduated from St. James School in 1958 with a degree in baking. He served his country in the US Army stationed in Korea. Leonard then worked as a baker for Jewel/Eisner from 1965-1970. He later earned a Radiologic Degree and worked at St. John’s Hospital for thirty four years where he was known as the Candyman. Leonard enjoyed and played many sports including basketball, baseball and bowling. He was a Chicago Cubs fan as well as a Jeff Gordon #24 fan. Leonard enjoyed camping, fishing, organizing car shows and assisting and participating with the Special Olympics.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30am Friday November 18, 2022 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9:30am until the time of service Friday at Bisch and Son.
