He was born on August 18, 1937, in Bader, IL, the son of Wilmer C. and Wilma (Wise) Cripe. Johnnie married Joan E. Kruse on July 9, 1960. She preceded him in death, on September 26, 1995. Johnnie then married Dolly A. Turner on June 26, 1997. She preceded him in death, on November 6, 2018.
Johnnie graduated from Astoria High School, where he lettered in baseball, football, basketball, and track. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army. As an entrepreneur, Johnnie owned J.C. Gun Smithing and Cripe Office Machines, both in Springfield. He was a member of Elm Street Christian Church and led multiple home bible study groups. He was also a long time member of the Abe Lincoln Gun Club. Johnnie was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and hunter. His relationships with his church, family, and friends were very important to him.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Johnnie is survived by his daughters, Jean (Michael) Knoedler and Jonnell (Fred) Baskett, both of Springfield; grandchildren, Fred (Cynthia) Baskett, Jon Quinton Baskett, Parker Baskett, and Ashton Baskett, all of Springfield; brother, Dean (Barbara) Cripe; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Funeral: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Elm Street Christian Church, 3020 E. Elm St., Springfield, followed by the Funeral at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Michael King officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.
