Dr. John Paul Navins (Jack), age 73 passed away suddenly July 11, 2022 while traveling in France. Jack was born to parents Paul J. and Mary I Navins on October 31, 1948 in St. Paul, MN. He graduated from St. Mary's College in Winona, MN and University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN. He served in the U. S. Navy 1970 - 1992, retiring as a Captain.
After leaving the Navy he joined a medical practice in Springfield. Jack spent the rest of his life in Springfield, enjoying friendships, volunteer work at the Lincoln Library and Museum, and the medical school.
Jack had a lifelong love of books and shared his love of reading by selecting specific books as gifts to family or friends. He also enjoyed traveling the world with friends, seeing and learning all he could during those travels. He was enjoying such a trip when he died in France.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Navins and Mary Navins Burke, his brother James Navins, his step-father Bernard Burke and his brother-in-law Lawrence Wlazik. He is survived by his sisters Mary Pat Wlazik, Katherine Warner, brother-in-law Daniel Warner, nephews Steven (Sara), David (Cori), Bobby (Darcy), Michael (Katie), great- nieces, great-nephew, cousins and friends.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering on Monday, August 22, 2022 at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception 524 E. Lawrence Springfield, IL from 9:30 am until 10:15 am. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am with Very Reverend Brian Alford celebrant. Inurnment will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery Columbarium with military honors conducted by the United States Navy and the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
A second memorial service will be held in MN at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Lincoln Library and Museum, or the donor's choice.
