John E. “Jack” Merz, 86, of Springfield, passed away on December 10, 2024 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg. He was born on November 10, 1938 in Springfield to John Martin Merz and Lura Gertrude Murray Merz. John married Sharon Tremain in Springfield on February 13, 1959 and she survives.
Mr. Merz is also survived by four children: Kathy (Jeff) Rasor, Martin (Patty) Merz, Debra (David) Hayes and Thomas (Tracy) Merz, thirteen grandchildren: Beth Griffin, Justin Rasor, Alyssa Taylor, David Hayes, Joshua Merz, Kamber Merz, Jennifer Saccomano, Amanda Alford, Jeremy Merz, Daniel Merz, Destini Furman, Alex Merz and Salina Merz as well as 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one grandson Travis Rasor, one sister Ethel Louise Ollech and her husband Ernie, two nephews: Ernest and Eric Ollech and three cousins: James, Charles and Ethel Mattox.
Jack worked for Eisner’s and retired from Bunn Capitol. He enjoyed model trains, 4th of July fireworks, television, history and his grandsons taking him to the movies. Jack loved his family and family times.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Monday December 16, 2024 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00pm until 3:00pm Sunday December 15, 2024 at Bisch and Son.
