I was very sorry to hear of John's passing. 
John and I met while working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Chicago in the early 1960s. A friendship developed, soon to include our spouses. It continued when they moved to Rockford, but their move to Springfield gradually reduced our contact.
Having lost my wife just 2 years ago, I can identify with the sorrow that Lucy must be feeling. 
I'm sure John will surely be missed.

We have many fond memories of time spent with Lucy and John. So sad to hear of his passing.

I worked for John Anderson nearly 20 years.

   John was a great boss. 

  When things were going good he gave the credit to his subordinates. When we had problems and things weren’t going good he always took the responsibility.

 He gave his managers and supervisions a lot of latitude to carry out their duties and didn’t micro-manage.  John always backed his managers.
 
John was a happy up-beat person. If things did not work out the first time John would try again later or try things a different way. He never gave up when faced with obstacles.

 I feel John major accomplishments with IEPA.

The Organic Laboratory at the SIU School of Medicine. John Anderson and John Hurley worked for years to get the laboratory built,

Increased the Divisions' equipment budget for three laboratories from $19,000 to a little over $1 million per year.

Personally rebuilt the Distillation system at the Chicago laboratory. 

 I feel it was a privilege to have worked with John Anderson.  He was fair, he was unpretentious, he as unfailing enthusiastic and he was a true gentleman.

Rest in Peace John. I enjoyed working for you back in the 90s. You treated us well.

I am saddened to hear of John's passing. I saw John as my mentor while I worked for him at the Illinois EPA, Division of Laboratories. He was a true leader and exceptional manager and good person.

I remember his love for all things trains and short-wave radio. On a trip to Washington, D.C., for a NELAC meeting, John talked me into taking the train with him. It was a 24 hour adventure for sure as we would listen in on the train crews as he had a special radio set to the train crew frequency.

I have only fond memories of working with him.  He gave me many opportunities to take on new projects and challenges for which I am eternally grateful.  I learned a lot from him. He taught me how to be a good writer and tried his best to make me a better listener.

One thing funny I remember is, we would go out to lunch and he would have his favorite foods and then he would tell me not to tell Lucy the next time I see her, because she had him on a "healthy diet".  He would also always let us sneak out of the building early on the day before a big holiday started.

I am so sorry Lucy for your loss. You are in my prayers. I will always remember John.

I was privileged to know John for many years through our shared love of Amateur Radio, and more specifically, our shared interest in the use of Morse Code in the hobby. Besides being a good friend, in my early years in the hobby, I learned a lot from John. His presence at our weekly lunches, his boundless sense of humor and his vast knowledge of the hobby will be badly missed. My condolences to Lucy, his family, and his many friends. / Woody Hester
