She was born in Springfield on Oct. 26, 1932, the daughter of Johanna Magill Cross and Estil Rupert Cross.
Jeanne's greatest joy was her family. She was very proud of them and delighted in knowing her grandchildren were exceptional young adults. Jeanne enjoyed traveling and learning about cultures, politics and people. Her love of music extended throughout her life. She took great pleasure in singing and recorded some of her favorite songs on a compact disc for her family and friends. For many years she was a member of the Sweet Adelines and was most recently a member of the Celebration Chorus in Springfield. Jeanne served as a board member of the University of Illinois at Springfield's Friends of the Auditorium.
Jeanne was married to Robert C. Lanphier III. Her loving family includes two daughters, Carla Stahl (David) Graham of Pawley's Island, S.C., and Carolyn Stahl (Jeff) Floyd of Darnestown, Md.; four grandchildren, Katherine Graham, Betsy Graham, Alex Floyd and Jackie Floyd: four stepchildren, Robert Lanphier, Edward (Cameron) Lanphier, Jonathon (Laura) Lanphier, and Margaret (John) Hawn; and 13 stepgrandchildren, Ned, Kate, Carr, Hank, Liza, Mac, Marnie, Alexandra, Stephen, Jack, Christine and Tom to whom she was known as Meemaw. She also is survived by her sister, Jody (Bill) Byers of Decatur and her children, Brenda and Doug.
Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, of her loving and vivacious life can be sent to the Memorial Medical Center Foundation, to Sweet Adelines of Springfield, to the Niantic Christian Church, or to the Friends of the Auditorium, University of Illinois at Springfield.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at the Boardman-Smith Funeral Home from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a service. Friends are invited to join in a "Celebration of Jeanne's Life" at her home, Crosscreek, at 6:30 p.m.
