Jan Kessinger, of Springfield, passed away at 6:25 a.m. on September 15, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on September 4, 1933, in Aurora, Illinois, to Icle M. and Dorothy B. Kessinger. Jan married Darlene Marsh, of Riverton, in the First United Methodist Church, Springfield, IL on July 15, 1956.
Jan proudly served his country in the Illinois Air National Guard where he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant from the 183rd Air National Guard at Capitol Airport in Springfield, Illinois, in 1988, after more than 38 years of combined military service. Throughout his career, Jan worked in aircraft maintenance and was stationed at several Air Force Bases, including Bergstrom (TX), Sheppard (TX), and George (CA).
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and had many passions, including hunting, fishing, stained glass work, clock repair, and bicycling - Jan often noted one of his greatest accomplishments was biking across the United States in 1998.
He was known for his kind heart and deep love for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Kessinger, his son, Jan Thomas II, and his parents. He is survived by his two daughters, Jeanine Kessinger and Susan Beaird both of Springfield, IL. He will be remembered as a loving grandfather to Rob (wife PK) Wilson of Chatham, IL, Nicole (husband Bryan) Hooks of Orion, IL, Renee (husband Todd, deceased) Ligman of Wasilla, AK, and Daniel (partner Tara Strevels) Wilson of Springfield. His great-grandchildren, Corbyn Hooks, McKenna Hooks, Kendyl Ligman, and Zoie Wilson, brought immense joy to his life.
Cremation was accorded by Bisch Crematory.
Inurnment with military honors will take place on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Riverton. Reverend Dr. Roger Grimmett from First United Methodist Church will officiate.
