James M. “Jim” Deterding, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Bartlesville, OK, passed away Thursday November 3, 2011 at St. John’s Hospital.
Jim was born in Bluffs, IL, October 22, 1928 the son of the Rev. John and Salome (Schwagmeyer) Deterding. He proudly served his country in the Signal Corp during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army. He married Martha A. Christiansen in Chicago, IL February 10, 1951 and she survives.
He is also survived by his son; Christopher (wife Patti) Deterding of Annapolis, MD, his daughter, Emilie (husband Steve) Sine of McGaheysville, VA, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three brothers: George of Clearmont, FL., Walter of Middleton, WI., and Roland (wife Pat) of Bloomington, IL; also two sisters Emily Winkelman of Virginia, IL., and Betty (husband Duane) Beringer of Honolulu, HI, 23 nieces and nephews, and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a son Timothy James Deterding, two brothers the Rev. John and Paul, and two sisters Lorna Deterding and Doris Deterding.
He was an electrical engineer by profession. He retired in 1993 as the director of the National Institute of Petroleum and Energy Research in Bartlesville, OK. He was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, LCMS in Bartlesville, OK. He was very active and committed to the Lutheran Mission Society in Baltimore, MD, serving as a board member. Jim and his family were very active with the Association for Retarded Citizens for over 50 years.
A funeral service will be held Monday, November 7, 2011 at 3 PM at the Concordia Village Chapel (on the campus of Concordia Village) 4101 W. Iles Ave. Springfield, IL. Chaplain Jonathon Vierkant will officiate. The family r will eceive friends in the chapel beginning at 2 PM.
