He was born February 2, 1936 in Springfield, Illinois the son of Augusta and Fred Stone. He married Laura McNicholas in 1974. She preceded him in death on February 22, 2009. His sister, Betty Dickerson also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his five sons and ten grandchildren. Gerald (Monica) Stone of Springfield, Illinois father of Sami (Tabetha), Maxwell, Amir, Zack, and Michael; Dr. W. Thomas McNicholas, DVM (Janna) of Ponte Verde Beach, Florida father of Madison and Evelynn; Michael McNicholas of Rochester, Illinois father of Meagan and Michael; Dr. Matthew Stone, DVM of Surfside Beach, South Carolina; Gregory (Christina) Love Stone of Bloomington, Minnesota father of Charlie. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Carter.
Fred attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Feitsthans High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953. After his tour of duty, he enrolled at the University of Illinois where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1960. He worked for the State of Illinois Bridge Office, the State of California Bridge Office and several private firms in the Springfield area. He also was the Superintendent of Highways in Piatt County. Fred and Gunes Ozyurt founded Ozyurt and Stone, Inc. in 1990. He retired in 2006 as President of the company.
While working for the State of Illinois Bridge Office, he designed and detailed the F.A.I. Route 474 Illinois River Cantilever Truss Bridge at Creve Coeur, Illinois bypassing Peoria, Illinois.
While working for Collins & Rice, Inc., Consulting Engineers, Springfield, Illinois, Fred designed and detailed the Fabyan Bridge over the Fox River midway between Geneva and Batavia, Illinois. The bridge was haunched and welded plate girder bridge, fabricated of high-strength weathering steel. This bridge was the subject of an American Iron and Steel Institute Highway Bridge Report 10. The Fabayan Bridge was the first bridge known to be completed using Load Factor Design.
Fred was a licensed structural engineer, licensed professional surveyor and licensed professional engineer. In 1985, he was named Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a member of the Christ the King Church.
He was a musician and played the tuba in the Springfield Municipal Band, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the University of Illinois Marching Band. He also played the piano. He enjoyed playing handball and tennis. He was city and district handball champion Class A in singles and doubles. His hobby was playing duplicate bridge.
Cremation was accorded by Bisch Crematory. A memorial gathering will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield. Private Family Burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery.The Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will provide military honors.
