Ernest M. Murphy

Ernest M. Murphy, 92, of Springfield, died at 11:55 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center. Ernie was born June 30, 1921 in Springfield, the son of Ernest M. and Ruth Berriman Murphy. He married Anna Bell Downs on September 3, 1943 at the Third Presbyterian Church in Springfield. Ernie was a graduate of Springfield High School and worked for Illinois Bell for 42 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Ernie enjoyed golfing, reading, watching sports, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Thomas Murphy; one sister, Lauraallen Avery; and one son, Lt. Michael Murphy. He is survived by his wife, Annabell Murphy of Springfield; one daughter, Pat Anderson of Springfield; three grandchildren, Jill (husband, Michael) Morgan of Williamsville, Katie (husband, Josh) Nelson of Rochester, and Mike Anderson of Springfield; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Zach, Aiden, Olivia, Ethan, and Dylan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 3:30-6:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following ceremonies. Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
