Dr. Arnaldo Gomes de Carvalho, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Springfield, Illinois on Sunday, April 8, 2018. Dr. Carvalho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 19, 1935, to Julio Alves and Emilia Moraes (Gomes) de Carvalho. After graduating first in his class from medical school, he came to the U.S. for further training in 1960. He completed an internship in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he met his wife, Grace. They married in 1961 and just celebrated their 57th anniversary together. He followed up with a residency in internal medicine at the Lahey Clinic in Boston (1960-1964) and completed a fellowship in cardiology at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston (1961-1964). After working in Rio and in Wadsworth, Kansas, he came to Springfield in 1966 and practiced cardiology there from 1966-1968 and 1970-1987. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in Seattle, Washington from 1968 to 1970 as Chief of Cardiology at the USPHS Hospital. From 1987 until 1990, he had a clinical practice in Fort Myers, Florida, and then returned to Springfield to practice internal medicine at Doctors Hospital until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Carvalho was vice-chairman of cardiology at the Illinois Heart Association and served as chief of the Department of Cardiology at St. Johns Hospital (1970-1977) and as Clinical Associate Professor at SIU School of Medicine. During his career, he was proud to have introduced new techniques in electrophysiology, to study cardiac arrhythmias, and to publish several articles in this field. In addition to his work, Dr. Carvalhos many passions included travel, literature, and music; but without question, his primary passion was soccer. He attended seven World Cups over a 28-year period and cherished every Brazilian championship throughout his lifetime. He is survived by his wife, Grace; daughters, Linda (Casey) Younkin, Susan (David) Chumney, and Michelle (Brian) Kraft; son, Arnaldo G. (Marjorie) de Carvalho Jr.; and seven grandchildren. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
