Alfred Alonzo Harney, 93, of Springfield, died at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at his home. Alfred was born on January 12, 1913 in Virden, the son of Olethea Joy and Mary Hoppin Harney. He married Nora Whitehead; she preceded him in death in 1963. He then married Dorothy M. Molloy in January 1971. He was a 1930 graduate of Springfield High School. He graduated from Springfield College in Illinois in 1933 and received his B.S. in 1936 from the University of Illinois. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran receiving the Bronze Star during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Harney was a member and served as an Elder with the First Presbyterian Church in Alton. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Ansar Shrine. He was active in Boy Scouts and Junior Achievement. He was employed as the Fire Chief in Angel Fire, New Mexico. He served as Vice President of Sales for Mississippi Lime Company. Alfred was a loving, giving gentleman who was always happy and enjoyed life. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Harney; his parents; three brothers: Robert, Owen and James Harney. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Harney of Springfield, one son, Dr. Alfred N. (wife, Mary S.) Harney of Springfield; five daughters: Mary Anne (husband, Terry) Theyssen of Springfield, Marcia Durian of Lawrenceville, GA, Jaclyn (husband, Andy) Mellor of Phillips, ME, Ellen Lock (companion, Rhonda Griswold) of Barrington, NH and Lea Anne (husband, Dan) Varble of Carrollton; eight grandchildren: Lindsey Price, Matthew Harney, Christopher Durian, Patrick Durian, Jennifer Isringhausen, Jacki Varble, Jacob Varble and Joshua Varble; one sister, Marian Clemmons of Edina, MN and several nieces and nephews. Cremation accorded by Cremation Tribute Center, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with Scott Brindley officiating and military honors will be performed.
