Al was born on August 2, 1954, in Quincy, Illinois. He graduated in 1972 from Catholic Boys High School in Quincy. Al went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Quincy College in 1976, and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Illinois in 1989. He began his career serving the citizens of Illinois as a caseworker with the Department of Children and Family Services and retired from the position of public service administrator with the Department of Human Services.
He was deeply committed to his family and friends. Al tended to these relationships with love, trust, and joy, creating countless memories to be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to have him pass through their lives. Over the years his dogs, birds, fish, plants, and landscaping adventures all thrived in his loving care. Al had a wonderful sense of humor enhanced by a sprinkling of quirkiness, that when combined with his care and genuine concern for those around him, truly elevated him to the most special of persons.
Al is survived by his loyal canine companion, Jake; two brothers, Ronald (Gail) Dietrich, Sr. and Mark (Laura) Dietrich; sister-in-law, Ann Dietrich; step-sisters, Dorothy McHatton, Sue (Jack) Flachs, and Marty (Tom) Redington; step-brother-in-law, Dean Chandler; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Dietrich; brother, David Dietrich; and step-sister, Carol Chandler.
