Gene McFadden passed away at his home in Springboro, Ohio on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2020, at the age of 92. We suspect he chose this date to avoid having to eat Joan’s dry turkey and to ensure he could vote in the election but could avoid having to deal with the aftermath.
Gene was born in Ozark, Alabama, but grew up in Hollywood, California. At the ripe age of 17, he volunteered for service in the United States Navy where he quickly realized he didn’t much enjoy being bossed around. He served as a Transportation Specialist and a Journalist in World War 2 until his Mother became ill.
Upon his return home to Southern California Gene worked as a man of many talents; a bartender, a plumber, and most importantly a charming son of a gun. He married 6 times and had an inkling that the 7 th time would be a charm but the love of his life Joan King knew better. He spent 27 wonderful years with Joanie, who finally accepted his proposal in 2019. They moved to Ohio shortly after to be closer to family. He leaves behind Joan King (fiancé), a sister, nine children, a dozen or so grandchildren, and a few great grandchildren.
Gene wanted the world to know that he visited Ireland and kissed the Blarney stone twice. It must have worked because Gene was blessed with a surreal gift of eloquence that persisted until his final days. He had a sharp mind and a lovingly playful sharp tongue to match. Having mastered the art of storytelling Gene was known for singing, writing, and reciting poetry from memory until his final years.
Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but well-wishers are encouraged to enjoy a drink in his honor on December 12th. Gene would recommend a scotch, a beer or Ménage a Trois wine. Gene McFadden was truly a one of a kind, gentleman. He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
