Miriam “Mitzie” Berkowitz, age 94, died peacefully in her home on May 17, 2022. She was born August 19, 1927 in the Bronx to Hyman and Mamie (Spitalnick) Zaretzky. She graduated from Taft High School and attended New York University. Mitzie settled in Rockland County in 1947. After Mitzie retired from banking she devoted her time to the Foster Grandparents program and became “Grandma Mitzie” to numerous preschool children at the Campus Fun and Learn Center at Rockland County Community College. Mitzie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt, and beloved friend to many. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Marcia (Mac) Eber, Anne (Malcolm) Lishnoff, Elaine (Harold) Fine, her brother, Harvey Zaretzky, and her nephew, Michael Zaretzky. Survivors include her sons, Mitchell (Sally) Berkowitz, and Robert (Laurie Weinberg) Berkowitz, her eight grandchildren, Adam (Atef) Berkowitz, Jordan (Mira) Berkowitz, Kim (Mark) Roberts, Kate (John) Stimmel, Shelly Fortin, Lindsay, Sam, and Jason Weinberg, and great grandchildren Uma and Jud Boulaabi Berkowitz, Nora Berkowitz, Annalise and Jackson Stimmel, and Scott, Kyle, Taylor and Libby Fortin. She is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Gloria Zaretzky, and numerous nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, May 19th 11:30 am at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State St, Spring Valley, NY 10977. Interment will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652. Those who wish to remember Mitzie in a special way may make a gift in her memory to United Hospice of Rockland.
