Marilyn (Merri) Rosenbaum was born December 7, 1927 to Julia and Philip Weinstein in the Bronx. A child of the Depression, Merri combined attending public school and working from an early age. Merri was the first person in her family to go to college, graduating from Brooklyn College with an English degree in 1947. That the same year, she met the love of her life, Irwin, with whom she shared the next 60 years very happily together. A year later they married and, in 1953, they had their first son, Howard. Robert (1956) and Jeffrey (1960) soon followed.
Leaving the city for Rockland County shortly after Howard arrived, the family settled in Monsey in 1960. Soon after, she began a long and eventful career teaching English at Spring Valley Senior High School. While raising three young boys and teaching full-time, Merri completed her Masters degree in English at CUNY, attending classes in the evening. She retired in 1989, one year after Irwin retired, and they embarked on a journey that took them all over the world, with special time spent with family in Minneapolis and the UK.
Merri was full of life, intellectually curious, very engaging and eager to meet new friends. None of that stopped after Irwin passed away in 2009. Merri highly valued her volunteer activities, and delighted in helping at the local Holocaust Center, a consignment shop, and a project gathering, cleaning, and donating clothes to veterans. She was active in Hadassah and the Rockland chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, which honored Merri for her years of highly valued service. In the years after Irwin passed, she developed a large and caring network of friends in whose company she thrived.
Merri is preceded in death by her parents, Julia and Philip. She is survived by her younger brother, Leon, her sons, Howard (Kathy Anderson), Robert (Maggie Gilbert), and Jeffrey, five grandchildren (Samuel (Jennifer), Benjamin (Erin), Jacob (Morgan), Tal and Noam) and two great grandchildren (Ava and Mia). Merri lived a life of meaning and joy, and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. May her memory be a blessing
