It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard Chetkof, 94, of Delray Beach, Florida. Bernie, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, left us peacefully, surrounded by family. He is survived by his two children, Lisa Casey and Gary Chetkof, as well as his son-in-law, Troy Casey, and Gary's life partner, Marika, as well as his life partner of nearly 24 years, Sheila Gelman. Bernie’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Lindsey and Pete Cardoso, Randon and Blake Casey, Ali Chetkof and Jeremy Rhodes, Derek Casey and Cynthia Paredes, and Monte Chetkof and his great twin-grand-daughters Lilah and Harper.
Bernie was the widower of Marilyn Chetkof, with whom he shared 46 wonderful years of marriage. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Louis and Ethel Chetkof, and was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Chetkof.
A proud Brooklynite, Bernie graduated from Erasmus High School in 1947 and went on to earn his degrees from NYU College and Brooklyn Law School, completing a five-year program and graduating in 1952. Just days after passing the bar exam on July 1st and 2nd, he married the love of his life, Marilyn, on July 3rd. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, where he served honorably and was discharged as a corporal a year later.
Bernie built a successful 45-year legal career in Long Island as a partner with Zinman & Chetkof, specializing in litigation, matrimonial matters, contracts, real estate, and personal injury. He was deeply committed to his clients and took pride in advocating for justice, always standing up for the underdog. His work extended beyond the courtroom; he tirelessly contributed to numerous political campaigns in New York as a campaign director and served as legal counsel to the Supervisor of the Town of Oyster Bay. Additionally, he was an elected Water Commissioner in Plainview, NY, for 16 years, demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Family was always Bernie’s top priority, and he instilled the importance of love and support in those around him. His passion for baseball began in his childhood, growing up near Ebbets Field, where he became a dedicated Brooklyn Dodgers fan, fondly recalling the many games he attended with his father. In addition to baseball, Bernie loved the New York Islanders hockey team and enjoyed following football and tennis throughout his life, as well as attending games. He also loved theater and Broadway.
A memorial service will be held in Delray Beach on Wednesday, September 25th, followed by a burial service in Long Island on Friday, September 27th; details will be shared with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization in Bernie’s memory.
Bernard Chetkof will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his sharp intellect, and his kind heart. He leaves a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him
