Arthur was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 24, 1937, to Dorothy “Dot” and Hyman “Hy” Yorkes. He and his dear brother David were always very close and spoke almost every day for over fifty years.
Arthur attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City where he played fullback, being named All City, and also ran track. He then earned a degree in accounting from Pace University in Manhattan, and soon after he received his CPA.
Arthur married Audree Goodman in September 1959. They had two sons, Peter who is in finance and Michael who is a Post Production Specialist at ABC. The family made their first home in Valley Stream, New York, and then moved to Orangeburg, New York in 1972. Audree and Arthur were married for fifty six years. After a long illness, Audree passed in July 2015.
Arthur founded Arthur Yorkes & Company in New York where he treated his employees like family and many of his clients became his dear friends. He worked hard and played hard. He loved to play tennis and paddleball, and was a terrific swimmer and diver.
Arthur took great joy from his two beautiful granddaughters Molly, 26, and Emma, 23. He loved them both and always lit up when he saw them.
Arthur was a sweet, kind and a most generous man who was always there for anybody who needed him. He had a great sense of humor and lots of charm.
Arthur always wanted to give back to his community. He served as treasurer of Rockland Federation and helped get the financing to build the JCC building in Rockland. He was also the treasurer of the Rockland JCC Campus. In addition he was the treasurer of the Orangetown Jewish Center, the synagogue he loved so much and where he was a member of the congregation for over fifty years.
Arthur met Carole Glantz on a blind date and they quickly fell in love. They were married in June 2018.
Arthur will be missed by Dale, David’s wife, who was like a sister to him. He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews, Stacy Actman (Andrew), Jeffrey Yorkes (Molly) and Nicole Rivera (Alfonso), by Molly and Emma’s mother, Hedi, and by Carole’s children, Jeffrey Blue (Christina) and Greg Blue (Megan), and grandchildren Maxwell, Josie, Zachary, MacEnzie, Madeline, Olivia and Isaac.
Arthur had so many friends across the country and here in New York. He was fortunate to have an especially close relationship with OJC's very special Rabbis, Craig Scheff and Paula Mack Drill. He always tried to do everything right, and his friends often said that he set the standard. His passing will be a great loss to all of us.
