John Joseph Connolly was born on May 4, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois to parents James and Anne (McDonough) Connolly. John attended Pine Knoll School in Stone Lake and graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago. In 1943 John enlisted in the U. S. Army and served with distinction during World War II. After the war John worked construction in Chicago as a member of the Hod Carriers, Building and Common Laborers’ Union, Local No. 4. Eventually he settled back in Stone Lake on the family farm, while working part time as a surveyor for a local government agency. John was hired by the U.S. Postal service and retired after 28 years as a rural carrier. After his retirement John took up the game of golf and actively played in leagues until a recent illness forced him to suspend playing. John loved to bowl, garden, and entertain family along with friends when they visited the area. John was an accomplished woodcarver displaying many of his creations in his home. He gave many of his works of art to friends and relatives.
John is survived by his sister Eileen (Martin) Cleary of Illinois and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
John is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary (Bill) West, Sally (Gerald) Dugan, Margaret (Art) Gillett, Agnes Connolly and brothers Patrick Connolly and James (Mary Louise) Connolly.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Home in Spooner, Wisconsin. A Mass of Christian Burial for John will be on Saturday July 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Stone Lake, Wisconsin with Father Greg Hopefl officiating. Music will be provided by Sister Felissa Zander. Interment will follow the Mass at Evergreen Cemetery in Stone Lake, Wisconsin with full military honors.
