Born in Spokane in 1923, Betty went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. She was the only daughter of King and Lelia Jernigan. She spent her early years in Davenport, WA. They moved to Spokane where she attended Roosevelt Elementary School and graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in January 1942. She was one of the first female Tellers who worked for the Old National Bank. In the spring of 1943, Betty met Herschel Gustafson, who was stationed at Farragut with the US Navy, at a dance held at St. John’s Episcopal Church. They were married in 1946. Betty was a member of Fourth Memorial Church and had also been involved in Pro-America, Daughters of the American Revolution and Spokane College Women’s Association. She is survived by her loving husband, “Gus”; daughters, Rebecca L. “Becky” Flugstad (Ben) of Port Ludlow, Roberta J. “Bobbi” Caesar (Robert) of Spokane; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her younger brother, Kenneth M. Jernigan (Ann) of Concord, California; along with a niece and nephew and their families. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard, Spokane. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Fourth Memorial Church’s Riverview Bible Camp or Hospice of Spokane. The family also wishes to express their appreciation to the administration and caregivers at Rockwood South Hill’s Atrium.
