Rev. David John Eide, 88, passed on to heaven October 20, 2023, at Holy Family Hospital surrounded by his wife and children. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, November 10 at Spokane First Assembly of God - Shadle Campus, 5610 N. Ash Street in Spokane.
David was born in Anaconda, Montana, on January 8, 1935. He graduated from Anaconda High School and from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, with a bachelor degree, followed by a masters’ degree in religion. He then graduated with a master of divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. David's passion in life was preaching the good news of Jesus. In his early years of ministry, he traveled as an evangelist speaking at various locations in the Midwest. He also served as the first director for the Assemblies of God (AG) Chi Alpha college ministry.
David met the love of his life, Shirley Hamilton, in Spokane and made a good choice by marrying her at Ridgeview Assembly of God (now called Spokane First Shadle), where his brother-in-law, Eldred Nelson, and sister, Ruth, pastored. Following his ordination in the AG in 1960, David and Shirley pioneered and pastored churches in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Minnesota. After moving to Spokane and starting a Sunday School in a rural area, he later ministered at a Korean AG church, and then served as a volunteer with Shirley at Adult and Teen and Challenge. Seeing the guys experience Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit was such a joy to his spirit and a culmination of years of ministry.
Gathering raspberries and watering his tomatoes also brought him joy as did playing games and watching Jeopardy with his family, especially when there was a Bible category. He loved going out to eat salmon with his wife and showing his family memories from his filing cabinets. David loved Montana (fishing in the Big Hole River and ice fishing at Georgetown Lake), dessert with milk, Gatorade, his family, and Jesus Christ. He also was a terrific singer and played the piano, accordion, and violin. In college, he sang in Revivaltime Choir and a quartet called the King’s Messengers, recording an album with them. This love for music carried on to his children and grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Eide, his sister, Ruth Nelson, and his brothers, Charles and Kenneth Eide. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Eide; his daughters Priscilla Eide (Daniel) Lewis, Sherrill (Andrew) Castrodale, Christa (Ezrah) Schmeelk, and his son, Mark (Jennifer) Eide; and nine grandchildren, Keelin, Quincy, Clare, Rhea, Evan, Jackson, Matalin, Finn, and Rafe.
The family would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at Holy Family Hospital and Spokane Health and Rehabilitation for the amazing care he received over the last six months.
