Passed away on September 23, 2011 at the Sacred Heart Hospital. Carol was born on December 24, 1924 to Roy and Alta Carey in Hartline, WA. She graduated from Hartline High School in 1942 as the Class Salutatorian and from Kinman Business University in Spokane. Her first job was with State Farm Insurance.
On March 31, 1945 Carol married her childhood sweetheart Leroy Swigart (Bud). Their first home was in Electric City, WA where Bud worked in a grocery store. Bud and Carol were blessed with two daughters, Charlene Kaye (1946) and Norma Lee (1948).
May 1946 Bud and his Dad purchased a grocery/hardware store in Medical Lake. The family lived in the community for 16 years until they sold the store and bought and remodeled a grocery store in Coeur D’Alene. A year later the store was sold and the family moved to Spokane where Bud went to work for Jensen Byrd Co. and Carol became Secretary to the Administrator of the Deaconess Hospital.
In 1967 Bud & Carol purchased a hardware store in Quincy, WA. They lived in Quincy for eight years and were very active in the community. Carol was the Bookkeeper for all the businesses that Bud and Carol owned over the years. After selling the Quincy store Bud went back to work for Jensen Byrd and they moved to Moses Lake. While there, Carol worked for Edward D. Jones and made her successful but reluctant debut into the computer world. In 1986 they retired and built a house at Sun Country Golf Resort near Cle Elum, WA. In 1993 they returned to Quincy, living at the Quincy Valley Golf Course. During their retirement years, Bud and Carol spent their winters as “snowbirds” in Mesa, AZ.
Two years after Bud’s death, Carol moved to Harbor Crest Retirement Home in Spokane where she lived six wonderful active years.
Carol was always involved in all the communities they lived. She participated in her daughter’s activities which included Job’s Daughters, Girl Scouts and PTA. She has also been involved in Rebekah’s, Beta Sigma Phi, P.E.O and Red Hats.
Carol is survived by her daughters, Charlene Graham (Rich) Spokane and Norma Gilbreth (Alan) Springfield, OH; her brother Earl Carey of Wenatchee; six grandchildren, Mike Graham, David Graham, Stephanie Strasser, Scott Gilbreth, Kimberly Donovan and Stacy Ferryman; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
For every broken heart that she left here on earth, there are open arms waiting for her in Heaven, including her husband Bud, her parents, Roy and Alta Carey, brothers George Carey, Rodney Carey, Gene Carey and a sister Eva Flathers.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 8th at 2 p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home in Spokane Valley.
